 Classification of Furniture Styles

  1. Period Styles: TRADITIONAL
    • Are formal styles.
    • Many favorite traditional styles come from the 18th century—this was an age of prosperity and flourishing in the arts of the Western world.
    • Some of these styles were adapted and scaled to meet present day requirements without loosing their real character. 
  1. Contemporary Styles: MODERN
    • Simple but versatile aesthetics.
    • Puts more emphasis on comfort
    • Modern: from the modernist 1900s, while
    • Contemporary: style occurring in the present 

TRENDS in Furniture Styles

  1. TRADITIONAL FURNITURE
    • Royalty-influenced arts and controlled and purse string
    • Many of the traditional styles are named after the monarchs in whose reign hey were created
  1. PROVINCIAL FURNITURE
    • Produced as offspring of traditional styles: representing attempts of local cabinetmakers in the provinces to copy the court furniture of their day.
    • They adapted the classic designs to the requirement of the masses and their own limitation of tools, talents and materials.
    • Usually smaller in scale, no marquetry  work, very little carving
